Association does not establish cause
Correlation describes an association between variables. Ice-cream sales and swimming visits may both rise on hot days. Their association alone does not show that buying ice cream causes a swimming visit. Temperature is a possible common influence. Consider alternative explanations, study design, and the direction of any proposed effect.
