Separate selection from assignment

Random sampling helps select participants from a population. Random assignment places participants into study conditions and helps reduce confounding on average. They serve different purposes. Randomly assigning volunteers to two study methods can support a causal comparison within the study, but the volunteers may not represent every learner.
