A part of a whole

A proportion divides a part by the relevant total. If 8 of 20 visitors walk, the proportion is 8 divided by 20, or 0.4. As a percentage, this is 40%. Always identify the denominator: 8 walkers among 20 visitors is a different proportion from 8 among 80.
