Measure spread around the mean

Standard deviation measures spread around the mean and uses the same units as the data. Values that cluster tightly have a smaller standard deviation than values spread widely around the same mean. A standard deviation of zero means all observed values are equal. It does not measure the accuracy of an instrument or eliminate possible bias.
